They Fell On Their Faces!

By Rick Liggin

It is interesting to notice the reaction of Peter, James, and John, while on the mountain to transfiguration, when they were privileged to hear the voice of God speak to them from heaven. They heard God as He spoke the words, “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him!” (Matt. 17:5). And immediately, upon hearing God speak, Peter, James, and John automatically—together—reacted in exactly the same way: “they fell on their faces and were must afraid” (Matt. 17:6). They were so struck by the awesome power of the voice of God speaking to them from heaven that they could not help but respond with deep reverence and godly fear.

It’s amazing to me to see just how inconsistent men are today with their reverence and respect. Have you ever noticed that whenever one walks into a room where people are praying, he almost automatically stops and waits quietly until the prayer is finished? But when that same person walks into a room where God’s Word is being read, he noisily continues to do whatever it was that he came into the room to do. Men are reverent and respectful when men speak to God, but disrespectful when God speaks to men! Surely this is, at least, inconsistent. And even worse, it is disrespectful to God!

What we need is more of the attitude displayed by Peter, James, and John. We need to fall on our faces and become much afraid whenever we hear God’s Word spoken. We may not need to do this literally (though it sure wouldn’t hurt us to), but our attitude ought to at least be the same.

And who knows? We might even be surprised to find out that our relationship with God is improving and getting better. You see, a little reverence can really go a long way!
